Many of the Devon parishes are not entered into the IGI, as the Devon churches did not permit the LDS to make use of their registers. Even to this day there are restrictions as to how the registers may be used. Hence it is not a simple matter to discover who Thomas Westcott was and where he was born. The "extract" entries are taken from transcriptions of the registers that were done many years ago by the Devon & Cornwall Record Society. They cover about 60% of the parishes of Devon, but are not necessarily complete for each parish.

All we know is that he was living in Kentisbeare in 1829. There are a number of parishes in that area where he might have been baptised. One possible clue is that only one of his children had a child. The name of that child was Dorothy. Traditions often meant that first children were named after the mother or grandmother. Of the limited data on the IGI there are a couple of baptisms that fit in terms of age, but one of them has parents Thomas and Dorothy, leading me to slightly favour this - until more detailed investigation can be carried out.

Possible IGI entries (M=Member entries, E=Extract entry)
ME 1796 in Tiverton (to Thomas and Sarah) - died 1797
ME 1798 in Tiverton (to Thomas and Sarah)
ME 1798 in Ottery St Mary (to Thomas and Dorothy)
M "abt 1800" in Cullompton who married Mary - derived from Thomas's marriage to Mary Manley?
E 1801 in Butterleigh (to William and Joan)
Thomas and Sarah in Tiverton had a total of 9 children baptised. Sarah was Sarah Bryant (married 30 Sep 1775 in Tiverton)

Why did Thomas say he was a Widower, when in fact he had married Susan Shorter a few months earlier? Also why was their daughter registered as Dorothy Wescott SHORTER in Jun quarter of 1891 as she was born after the marriage? Was there some sort of shame because Susan was his first wife's niece?

General Notes: Possible baptism - father was apparently from Kentisbeare. This seems a bit early. There was also an entry for an Ann in 1836, so probably a different family (there is another Thomas and Mary living in Kentisbeare in 1851). In 1841 there is a 6yr old Elizabeth in Cullompton as a servant!
